Areas of Baku
- Old City (İçərişəhər): The UNESCO-listed walled town with the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs. Boutique hotels in historic buildings.
- The Boulevard (Seaside Park): The promenade along the Caspian Sea, with sea-view hotels.
- Nizami Street and Fountains Square: Shops, cafés and restaurants; the city’s liveliest pedestrian area.
- Around the Flame Towers: On the hill overlooking the city, with upscale hotels and views.
Getting in from the airport
- Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD): Aeroexpress buses and taxis run to the city centre.
- Getting around: Use a BakuCard on the metro and buses; most central sights are walkable.
What to check when choosing a hotel
- Entry requirements: Check the current entry rules for your nationality before you travel.
- Currency: Azerbaijan’s currency is the manat (AZN).
- Wind and season: Baku is a windy city; spring and autumn are the most comfortable times to visit.
- Old City access: Cars have limited access to the Old City’s narrow lanes; ask how to reach the hotel with luggage.
