Where to Stay in Barcelona: Areas and Top-Rated Hotels
Where to stay in Barcelona? The Gothic Quarter, Eixample, Gràcia and Barceloneta; getting in from the airport, choosing a hotel, and top-rated hotels.
Barcelona combines historic streets, Gaudí buildings and a beach in one city. The best area depends on how you want to spend your time. This guide covers the areas, getting in from the airport, and what to check when choosing a hotel. A list of top-rated hotels follows at the end.
Areas of Barcelona
- Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter): Narrow streets around the cathedral; the heart of the old town.
- El Born: The Picasso Museum, Santa Maria del Mar and boutique shops, just east of the Gothic Quarter.
- Eixample: Passeig de Gràcia, Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. Wide avenues and easy access to the rest of the city.
- Gràcia: Small squares and a local feel, a little away from the crowds.
- Barceloneta: The closest neighbourhood to the city beach, with seafood restaurants.
- Poblenou: A newer district near the beach, with many new hotels.
Getting in from the airport
- El Prat (BCN): Aerobús buses run to Plaça de Catalunya. The R2 Nord train runs from Terminal 2 to Sants and Passeig de Gràcia. Metro line L9 Sud links both terminals to the network.
- Getting around: The metro reaches most areas; the old town is best on foot.
What to check when choosing a hotel
- Tourist tax: Barcelona charges a per-person, per-night tourist tax that depends on the hotel category. Check whether the price includes it.
- Busy areas: La Rambla is crowded all day; keep an eye on your valuables.
- Centre or beach: Barceloneta or Poblenou suit a beach holiday; the Gothic Quarter and Eixample are more practical for sightseeing.
- Air conditioning and noise: Summers are hot, and the old town can be noisy; rooms facing an inner courtyard are quieter.
