Where to Stay in Berlin: Areas and Top-Rated Hotels
Where to stay in Berlin? Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain and Charlottenburg; getting around, choosing a hotel, and top-rated hotels.

Berlin has no single centre; each district has its own character and its own hub. Public transport is strong, so being close to an S-Bahn or U-Bahn line can matter more than the district itself. This guide covers the areas, getting in from the airport, and what to check when choosing a hotel. A list of top-rated hotels follows at the end.
Areas of Berlin
- Mitte: The Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island and Alexanderplatz. The most central area for a first visit.
- Prenzlauer Berg: Cafés, parks and quiet streets, north of Mitte.
- Kreuzberg: A lively, multicultural district with restaurants and a canal-side feel.
- Friedrichshain: The East Side Gallery and nightlife, across the Spree from Kreuzberg.
- Charlottenburg: The Kurfürstendamm shopping street and Charlottenburg Palace; the classic centre of West Berlin.
Getting in from the airport
- Berlin Brandenburg (BER): The FEX Airport Express runs to the Hauptbahnhof; regional trains and S-Bahn lines also connect to the city.
- Fare zones: Public transport is divided into zones A, B and C; the airport is in zone C, so buy the right ticket.
- Getting around: The S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses cover the whole city.
What to check when choosing a hotel
- City tax: Berlin’s accommodation tax is a percentage of the room price; check whether the price includes it.
- Close to a line: Look at how far the hotel is from an S-Bahn or U-Bahn station rather than just the district.
- Trade fair weeks: Prices rise and hotels fill up early during big trade fairs and congresses.
- Nightlife and noise: Some streets in Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain stay busy late; ask about the room’s side if you want quiet.
