Where to Stay in Istanbul: Areas and Top-Rated Hotels

Istanbul spans two continents and traffic is heavy, so your neighbourhood decides how much of the day you spend in transit. This guide covers the areas, getting in from both airports, and what to check when choosing a hotel. A list of top-rated hotels follows at the end.

Areas of Istanbul

  • Sultanahmet: Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace, the Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern within walking distance. Ideal for the historic peninsula.
  • Beyoğlu, Taksim and Galata: İstiklal Avenue, the Galata Tower and nightlife, with strong transport links.
  • Karaköy: The waterfront where the Golden Horn meets the Bosphorus; restaurants, galleries and boutique hotels near the tram and ferries.
  • Beşiktaş and Nişantaşı: The Bosphorus shore, Dolmabahçe Palace and shopping streets.
  • Kadıköy: The heart of the Asian side, with its market, the Moda seafront and a local feel; linked to the European side by ferry and Marmaray.
  • Şişli and Levent: Business districts and big malls; practical for business trips and close to the metro.

Getting in from the airport

  • Istanbul Airport (IST): The M11 metro line links the airport with Kağıthane and Gayrettepe, where you can change to the M2. Havaist buses serve many parts of the city.
  • Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW): The M4 metro line runs from the airport to Kadıköy. Havabus coaches and taxis are also available.
  • Getting around: Use an Istanbulkart on the metro, trams, Marmaray, Metrobüs and ferries.

What to check when choosing a hotel

  1. Which side? If your plans are on the European side, staying on the Asian side means crossing the Bosphorus every day. Choose by where you need to be.
  2. Close to rail: Roads are slow at rush hour; a hotel near a metro, tram or Marmaray station saves time.
  3. Historic buildings: Boutique hotels in Sultanahmet and Galata can have small rooms and steep streets; check for a lift.
  4. Views and room type: “Sea view” and “partial view” are not the same; read the room description.
