Where to stay in Milan? The Duomo, Brera, Navigli, Porta Nuova and the Centrale area; getting in from the airports, and top-rated hotels.

Milan is a city of fashion, design and trade fairs, and hotel prices rise sharply during big event weeks. This guide covers the areas, getting in from the airports, and what to check when choosing a hotel. A list of top-rated hotels follows at the end.
Areas of Milan
- The Duomo and historic centre: The cathedral, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and La Scala within walking distance.
- Brera: Galleries, boutiques and narrow streets; a smart area close to the centre.
- Navigli: Restaurants and bars along the canals; lively in the evening.
- Porta Nuova and Garibaldi: Modern towers and the Bosco Verticale, with strong transport links.
- Around Stazione Centrale: The main station and airport trains; practical for short stays.
- CityLife and the fair district: Practical for trade fairs and congresses.
Getting in from the airport
- Malpensa (MXP): Malpensa Express trains run to Milano Centrale and Cadorna.
- Linate (LIN): The M4 metro line links the airport with the city centre.
- Bergamo (BGY): Buses run to Milano Centrale.
- Getting around: You can pay by contactless bank card on the metro, trams and buses.
What to check when choosing a hotel
- Fair and design weeks: During big events such as the Salone del Mobile in April and fashion weeks, hotels fill early and prices rise.
- City tax: Milan charges a per-person, per-night accommodation tax; check whether the price includes it.
- Which airport? Malpensa is far from the city; choosing a hotel on your airport’s rail line saves time.
- Air conditioning: Milan is hot and humid in summer; make sure the room has air conditioning.
