Where to Stay in Phuket: Beaches and Top-Rated Hotels
Where to stay in Phuket? Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao and Phuket Old Town; getting in from the airport, and top-rated hotels.

Phuket is an island whose beaches are separated by hills, and each has its own character. The beach you choose shapes the rest of the trip. This guide covers the areas, getting in from the airport, and what to check when choosing a hotel. A list of top-rated hotels follows at the end.
Areas of Phuket
- Patong: The island’s liveliest beach, with Bangla Road nightlife, shopping and restaurants.
- Kata and Karon: South of Patong; calmer beaches that suit families.
- Kamala and Surin: Quiet bays and upscale resorts on the west coast.
- Bang Tao (Laguna): Large resort complexes along a long beach, relatively close to the airport.
- Phuket Old Town: Sino-Portuguese shophouses, cafés and markets; beaches are a drive away.
- Rawai and Nai Harn: The island’s southern tip; quieter, with local restaurants.
Getting in from the airport
- Phuket International Airport (HKT): In the north of the island. Taxis, minibuses and hotel transfers run to the beaches; the Phuket Smart Bus runs along the west-coast beaches.
- Getting around: Most trips between beaches are by taxi or ride-hailing app.
What to check when choosing a hotel
- Season: May to October is the rainy season, and the sea on the west coast can be rough. Follow the beach flag warnings.
- Distance to the beach: “Near the beach” can mean a short walk or a short drive; check on the map.
- Noise: Hotels in central Patong are close to the nightlife; for a quiet stay pick a side street or another beach.
- Entry requirements: Check visa and entry rules for your nationality with official sources before you travel.
