Where to Stay in Prague: Areas and Top-Rated Hotels

Prague’s historic centre is small and walkable, but the two banks of the Vltava feel quite different. This guide covers the areas, getting in from the airport, and what to check when choosing a hotel. A list of top-rated hotels follows at the end.

Areas of Prague

Staré Město (Old Town): Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock. The centre of sightseeing; busy in the evening.
Malá Strana: Baroque streets west of Charles Bridge, below Prague Castle.
Hradčany: Around Prague Castle; quiet with views, but uphill.
Nové Město (New Town): Wenceslas Square and shopping streets; practical for transport.
Vinohrady and Žižkov: Local neighbourhoods with cafés and parks, close to the centre by tram and metro and usually cheaper.

Getting in from the airport

Václav Havel Airport (PRG): Bus 119 runs to Nádraží Veleslavín metro station (line A); the Airport Express (AE) bus runs to the main railway station (Hlavní nádraží).
Getting around: The metro, trams and buses cover the centre; the old town is best on foot.

What to check when choosing a hotel

City tax: Prague charges a per-person, per-night accommodation tax; check whether the price includes it.
Historic buildings: Hotels in the Old Town and Malá Strana may have no lift, and cobbled streets are hard work with luggage.
Noise: The area around Old Town Square stays busy late; ask for a courtyard-facing room if you want quiet.
Currency: Czechia’s currency is the Czech koruna (CZK).
