Where to Stay in Rome: Areas and Top-Rated Hotels
Where to stay in Rome? The historic centre, Trastevere, Monti and Prati; getting in from the airports, choosing a hotel, and top-rated hotels.

Rome’s main sights are within walking distance of each other, but its neighbourhoods feel very different. This guide covers the areas, getting in from the airports, and what to check when choosing a hotel. A list of top-rated hotels follows at the end.
Areas of Rome
- Centro Storico: Around the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Campo de’ Fiori. Ideal if you want to explore on foot.
- Spanish Steps and Trevi: Via del Corso and the luxury shopping streets. Central and usually expensive.
- Monti: Close to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, with small trattorias and boutique hotels.
- Trastevere: Narrow cobbled streets on the west bank of the Tiber. Lively in the evening.
- Prati: Near the Vatican, with orderly streets; a quieter option.
- Around Termini: The main station and metro hub; practical for transport, with plenty of hotels.
Getting in from the airport
- Fiumicino (FCO): The Leonardo Express runs non-stop to Termini. The FL1 regional train stops at stations such as Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina. Buses and taxis are also available.
- Ciampino (CIA): Buses run to Termini.
- Getting around: Metro lines A and B meet at Termini; most of the historic centre is walkable.
What to check when choosing a hotel
- City tax: Rome charges a per-person, per-night tax (tassa di soggiorno), usually paid at the hotel. The amount depends on the hotel category.
- Driving: The historic centre has limited traffic zones (ZTL). Ask about parking and zone rules in advance.
- Lifts and room size: Hotels in historic buildings have small rooms, and lifts may be tiny or missing.
- Air conditioning in summer: July and August are hot; check that the room has air conditioning.
