Where to Stay in Vienna: Areas and Top-Rated Hotels
Where to stay in Vienna? Innere Stadt, Leopoldstadt, Mariahilf and the Hauptbahnhof area; getting in from the airport and top-rated hotels.

Vienna is divided into numbered districts (Bezirke), and public transport is excellent, so staying a little outside the centre is often practical. This guide covers the areas, getting in from the airport, and what to check when choosing a hotel. A list of top-rated hotels follows at the end.
Areas of Vienna
- Innere Stadt (1st district): St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Hofburg and the State Opera. The historic centre inside the Ring, and the most expensive area.
- Leopoldstadt (2nd): The Prater and the Danube Canal, within walking distance of the centre.
- Landstraße (3rd): Belvedere Palace; Wien Mitte station, where the airport train arrives, is here.
- Mariahilf and Neubau (6th and 7th): The Mariahilfer Straße shopping street and the MuseumsQuartier.
- Wieden and around the Hauptbahnhof (4th and 10th): Near the main station; practical for rail travellers and short stays.
Getting in from the airport
- Vienna Airport (VIE): The City Airport Train (CAT) runs non-stop to Wien Mitte. The S7 suburban train is a cheaper option, and ÖBB trains serve the Hauptbahnhof.
- Getting around: The U-Bahn, trams and buses are frequent and reliable.
What to check when choosing a hotel
- Accommodation tax: Vienna charges a local accommodation tax (Ortstaxe); check whether the price includes it.
- Close to the U-Bahn: Hotels outside the Ring are cheaper; being near a U-Bahn station makes the centre easy to reach.
- Busy periods: Hotels fill up fast during the Christmas markets (late November to late December) and big congresses.
- Breakfast and cancellation: Check whether breakfast is included and the free-cancellation deadline.
