Budget-friendly Istanbul: 3 days of ferries, pavilions and free art

A budget-friendly plan that reads Istanbul from three shores: Balat, Eyüp and Aynalıkavak on the Golden Horn; a museum, contemporary art and the free SALT buildings in Beyoğlu; Üsküdar and Küçüksu on the Asian side. Getting around is on foot, by tram, metro and ferry only; fares and hours link to the official source with the date we last checked them. Museums are closed on Mondays; plan the itinerary for Tuesday to Sunday.

Day 1 · The Golden Horn: Balat, Eyüp and Hasköy

Take the T5 tram up the western shore of the Golden Horn, move on from Balat to Eyüp, cross to Aynalıkavak Pavilion in Hasköy on the midday ferry and return to Karaköy on an evening sailing. The day is built around the gap in Golden Horn ferry sailings between midday and evening.

  1. Day 1 · 1 · 09:00–10:30

By T5 tram to Balat and Fener

Historic row houses with coloured facades in Balat

At Eminönü, board the T5 Eminönü–Alibeyköy tram and ride along the Golden Horn to the Balat stop. The line strings together Fener, Balat and Ayvansaray, neighbourhoods that sit outside the city's postcard routes. Once off the tram, walk slowly uphill: rows of houses with coloured facades, corner coffee houses and neighbourhood grocers are calmer early in the morning. Wander between Fener and Balat without hurrying, then ride the same line on to the Eyüpsultan Teleferik stop.

    Getting there

    1. Tram T5 · Eminönü → Balat
    2. Walk
    • Entrance fee

      Metro İstanbul fares: anonymous İstanbulkart full fare 46.20 ₺; single-use one-ride card 65 ₺.

      Source: metro.istanbul · last checked 2026-10-23

    Tips

At peak times the T5 runs every 5 minutes; boarding after nine is more comfortable. There is no paid site at this stop; the walk is hilly and cobbled, so wear comfortable shoes.

  2. Day 1 · 2 · 10:45–11:45

Eyüp Sultan Mosque and its surroundings

From the Eyüpsultan Teleferik stop, walk to the courtyard of Eyüp Sultan Mosque. The mosque stands at the centre of the Eyüp district; the courtyard, fountains and nearby tombs are busy with visitors all day. This is a working mosque, not a museum: check prayer times before going in and keep your voice down in the courtyard. Then follow the streets behind the mosque down to the shore and the Eyüp ferry pier.

    Getting there

    1. Walk

    Tips

Visiting hours and rules are not published by an official source; ask at the entrance. As in any mosque, visit outside prayer times and dress modestly.

  3. Day 1 · 3 · 12:00–12:20

Golden Horn ferry: Eyüpsultan to Hasköy

From the Eyüp pier, catch one of the midday sailings on the Beşiktaş–Haliç line and get off at Hasköy, the stop after Sütlüce. On the short crossing you see the Golden Horn from below its bridges, past old shipyard shores and between the neighbourhoods on both banks. It is a simple way to watch the inlet from the water on the city's everyday ferry, with no tour boat needed.

    Getting there

    1. Ferry Beşiktaş–Haliç · Eyüpsultan → Hasköy
    • Getting there

Departures from Eyüpsultan run every day between 11:20 and 13:05 and between 17:20 and 20:05; there are no sailings between 13:05 and 17:20. The line calls at Eyüpsultan, Sütlüce, Hasköy, Kasımpaşa, Karaköy, Kabataş and Beşiktaş.

    Aynalıkavak Pavilion

    Closed
Aynalıkavak Pavilion seen from the garden

A short walk from Hasköy pier brings you to Aynalıkavak Pavilion. This Ottoman pavilion, part of the National Palaces, is visited today as the Aynalıkavak Music Museum; instead of the crowds of the big palace routes you get a quiet garden on the Golden Horn and a building on a small scale. Take your time in the rooms, then rest in the garden. Have lunch along the Hasköy shore and spend time by the water until the evening ferry.

  5. Day 1 · 5 · 17:30–18:00

    Evening ferry: Hasköy to Karaköy

When the evening sailings start, board the same line's ferry from Hasköy towards Karaköy. On the way back you see the Golden Horn from the other direction, this time towards sunset; after Kasımpaşa the ferry docks at Karaköy pier beside the Galata Bridge. Stay on the Karaköy waterfront for dinner: in the harbour districts, balık ekmek, a sandwich of grilled fish with tomato and onion, is sold by vendors around the piers.

    Getting there

    1. Ferry Beşiktaş–Haliç · Hasköy → Karaköy

Day 2 · Beyoğlu's art trail and the Kadıköy ferry

On the way down from Tepebaşı to Karaköy: a museum, a contemporary art institution and two free SALT buildings, then an evening ferry from Karaköy to Kadıköy. All of the day's stops are indoors, so it also works on a rainy day.
