Luxury Rome: 3 days of the Vatican Gardens, palace collections and opera

A plan that leaves first-visit sights such as the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain to the main itinerary and sees Rome through gardens, Renaissance frescoes, palace galleries and an evening on stage: an open-bus tour of the Vatican Gardens, Villa Farnesina, Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, the Rome Opera, Palazzo Barberini with the Galleria Corsini, and two MICHELIN-starred dinners. Order the days like Thursday–Friday–Saturday: day 2 should not fall on a Wednesday or Sunday, day 3 not on a Monday.

Day 2 · Raphael frescoes, a palace gallery and the opera

Day 3 · A Baroque palace, a rooftop view and the Galleria Corsini

A day route appears on days with at least two stops at a verified location; on other days you can open each stop in Google Maps.

Day 1 · The Vatican Gardens and Banchi Vecchi

In the morning tour the Vatican Gardens on the official open bus and enter the Vatican Museums on the same ticket without a guide; in the evening, a two-MICHELIN-star dinner in the historic centre. This day should fall between Tuesday and Saturday (the garden tour does not run on Sundays and Il Pagliaccio is closed on Mondays).

Vatican Gardens open-bus tour and the Vatican Museums

    Booking required
Lawns among cypress and pine trees in the Vatican Gardens

Start the day with the official garden visit that the Vatican Museums sell as a separate ticket. An ecological, panoramic open bus drives through the Vatican Gardens for about 45 minutes with a dedicated audio guide, and there are no stops to get off. The ticket also covers unguided entry to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the same day, so after the gardens you enter the museums rested and with a selective plan. To avoid repeating the main itinerary's museum section, this stop focuses on the gardens; you can borrow the museum route from the main plan.

    • Opening hours

The garden tour runs Monday to Saturday (subject to the Vatican calendar) and lasts about 45 minutes; the Vatican Museums are open Monday to Saturday 08:00–20:00 (last entry 18:00).

    Tips

Sleeveless or low-cut clothing, shorts and mini-skirts are not allowed; seat belts are compulsory on the bus and selfie sticks may not be used. Children under 6 may not take part, and the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users.

Day 2 · Raphael frescoes, a palace gallery and the opera

In the morning, Villa Farnesina's frescoes on the Trastevere side; at midday, the Doria Pamphilj family gallery on Via del Corso; at night, the Rome Opera. This day should not be a Wednesday (Doria Pamphilj is closed) or a Sunday (Villa Farnesina opens only on the second Sunday of the month).

The frescoed vault and windows of the Loggia of Psyche at Villa Farnesina

Run by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Villa Farnesina is a Renaissance residence set among Italian gardens that holds masterpieces by Raphael and his school. In the main itinerary Trastevere was only an evening district; here you give the quietest hour of the day to Renaissance frescoes. The villa opens only on weekdays and in the morning, so the day has to start here. On Saturday at 10:00 there is also a guided tour of the villa and gardens in English.

    • Opening hours

Open on all weekdays 09:00–14:00; on the second Sunday of the month it opens 09:00–17:00 with a guided visit at 12:30.
