Kaçkar Plateaus Trekking, 7 Days

   Hemşin valley, Akyamaç and Bilenköy

   We meet at Rize Airport or the bus station and sit down to a local breakfast by a stream. After Ciha Castle, the first in a chain of fortresses, we walk to the waterfall in the Akyamaç valley. We visit the Bilenköy (Tepan) mosque and Zuğa village, watch green tea being made at a women's cooperative and stop at an old mansion before moving on to Çamlıhemşin.

2. 2

   Kale-i Bala, Çiçekli and Elevit plateaus

   From the Çat valley we drive up to Kale Köy to explore the Kale-i Bala castle and the old settlement around it. We climb to a viewpoint above Çiçekli plateau, walk down to the plateau and have a light lunch. After a forest walk of more than an hour at Elevit plateau, we see Zilkale and return to our accommodation.

   The Kaçkar north face and glacier

   Early in the morning we drive up to Kavron plateau and walk towards Öküz Çayırı. About two hours later we reach the meandering plain and follow the stream to the foot of the Kaçkar north glacier. On the way back we stop at a glacial lake and descend to the plateau; dinner is at a special venue.

   Hazindak plateau and an old plateau path

   Through the forest we make one of the toughest climbs of the programme to Hazindak plateau, gaining about 900 metres. From the plateau, known for its stone and wooden houses, we walk an old path towards Samistal or Amlakit and return the same way. The route can be switched to Pokut plateau if preferred. There is a small celebration in the evening.

5. 5

   Kavron to the Cengovit lakes, Çaymakçur

   From Kavron we climb through alpine meadows to the Cengovit glacial lakes at 3000 metres. After a half-hour walk to Karadeniz Lake, we descend to Çaymakçur plateau and, after a tea break, continue on foot to Galer Düzü. One of the most demanding days of the week.

6. 6

   Avusor, the fairy path and Huser

   We walk from Avusor plateau to Büyük Göl, then take a little-used trail from the Peri Yatak area up to Huser plateau. After watching the sunset we descend by a different path. Dinner comes with horon dancing and Black Sea music.

7. 7

   Habak, mansions and the Çağlayan valley

   The last day starts in Habak village with a walk among old mansions, one of which can be visited inside if open. Down on the coast we have lunch in the Çağlayan (Abu) valley, explore the valley and say goodbye at the airport at 18.00.
