Which route suits you?

On a first visit, an Eastern Black Sea tour through Trabzon, Rize and Artvin that visits highlands and valleys by vehicle shows the region as a whole. If you like walking, Kaçkar and Hemşin programmes are mostly on foot; difficulty and pace are shown on the card. For a quieter valley near the Georgian border, look at the Şavşat and Maçahel programmes.

When to go

Summer suits highland walks and festivals; autumn is when the forests change colour. In winter Ayder and the high plateaus are under snow and some highland roads close. The region gets rain in every season; mist and rain can change the order of a programme.

What to pack

Bring a rain jacket and layers even in summer; evenings on the plateaus are cool. Walking tours need ankle-supporting shoes with good grip. There may be no phone signal on the high plateaus, so carry some cash.
